Monetary systems and currencies are things that most people take for granted, considering the currencies printed by nation states, transferred through private banks and earned through individual labour. This is probably how most people consider money.

A movement is under way that is developing the models and infrastructure and democratic momentum for building a new economy – an inclusive, sustainable economy rooted in community: an economy that works for everyone, and that can sustain our life on this planet for many generations to come. In seed form, this economy is already begun. In the face of widespread dissatisfaction with the current economy, in the midst of pervasive poverty, unemployment and economic suffering, communities are being driven to experiment with an economy built from the ground up by democratically controlled organizations like cooperatives, social enterprises, community land trusts, employee-owned firms, and municipally owned enterprises.

New types of food production methods find its way into the world’s greatest cities, controlled and recycled food production units and it seems now that the majority of future food production will be located near large cities. The “perfect” cornfield could very well lie inside an industrial building, where production is automated.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) can be characterized by the presence of open, participatory processes of production and governance for the creation of common goods, whose universal access is guaranteed by licenses such as Creative Commons. P2P dynamics are most visible today in the many communities and movements self-organising around the co-creation of culture and knowledge. Some of the most well-known examples are the Creative Commons, Free Software and Open Source, Open Access in education and science, Wikipedia, Open Data, Open Government and Free Culture.
