Cooperatives are businesses with unique qualities and ways of working that provide a more collective, long-term ways of engaging in business. The fundamental difference with cooperatives is that they have members – not shareholders – who make decisions democratically. These members can be employees, producers or clients depending on the kind of cooperative. At the same time, they are the owners of the cooperative business. So they control and share the profits themselves. By the very nature, they work more closely together, share knowledge and provide opportunities in ways that are impossible for shareholder-driven businesses. Working together through local, national, regional, and international structures, cooperatives build a global network across sectors ranging from small-scale to multi-national businesses. With cooperation among cooperatives and rich resources – finance, technical assistance, and human capacity – cooperatives can constitute a major actor in economic, social, and human development around the world.
In this subject we are exploring how cooperatives can:
- foster a sustainable development
- foster the creativity that allows individuals to develop and implement solutions in a collective way.
- shift focus to the real economy and long-term, serving people’s needs and aspirations rather than financial markets and short-term profits.
- create a resilient and innovative economy that allows a diverse range of business models to flourish.
- make young people equipped to realise their entrepreneurial aspirations, and create an environment that supports the start-up and growth of people-centered businesses.
