This is probably how most people consider money.

However, money is not just something fixed – it is something that can be many things and take many forms. The conventional monetary system is based on hierarchical structures, hedonism and money created through loans issued by private banks. However, since the financial crisis in 2008, this system have been in a permanent crisis with a tendency to create instability, inequality and a persistent and predominant growth imperative. It has produced the highest-ever levels of personal and government debt, made housing unaffordable, and been a driver for the short-term consumer behaviour that is destroying the businesses and ecosystems on which we depend. These problems has led to a growing interest in money – not simply in terms of how we can get more of it, but also fundamental question about the construct money. What is money and where does it come from? How do the dominant forms of money we use cause us so many problems? And, significantly, how can money be re-designed to better serve our individual and collective needs?

This topic will touch upon the problems of our current debt-based monetary system, and explore the ground for monetary pluralism and complementary currencies. We will challenge the assumption that there is one, universal, or natural kind of money. Instead, money exists in multiple forms for different purposes and has done so throughout history. If we want, we are today able to create a new kind of money that encourages new kinds of social and economic relations.
