Nearly 80% of this population will by the year 2050 live in urban areas, and agricultural production and consumption are projected to be 60% higher than in 2007. Global demand for food, feed and fibre will nearly double while, increasingly, crops may also be used for bioenergy and other industrial purposes. New and traditional demand for agricultural produce will thus put growing pressure on already scarce agricultural resources. And while agriculture will be forced to compete for land and water with sprawling urban settlements, it will also be required to serve on other major fronts: adapting to and contributing to the mitigation of climate change, helping preserve natural habitats, protecting endangered species and maintaining a high level of biodiversity. As though this were not challenging enough, in most regions fewer people will be living in rural areas and even fewer will be farmers. They will need new technologies to grow more from less land, with fewer hands. What can be done to avoid this impending disaster?

New types of food production methods find its way into the world’s greatest cities, controlled and recycled food production units and it seems now that the majority of future food production will be located near large cities. The “perfect” cornfield could very well lie inside an industrial building, where production is automated.

In this subject, we will explore the concepts of:

  • Vertical Farming
  • Urban Farming
  • Aquaponics and Hydroponics

If successfully implemented, they offer the promise of urban renewal, sustainable production of a safe and varied food supply and a year-round crop production. In addition, ecosystems that have been sacrificed for horizontal farming can be repaired. Because locally produced food requires less transportation and refrigeration, it can supply nearby markets with fresher and more nutritious products at competitive prices. Vegetables have a short production cycle; some can be harvested within 60 days of planting, so are well suited for urban farming. Garden plots can be up to 15 times more productive than rural holdings. An area of just one square metre can provide 20 kg of food a year.[/fusion_text][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”1″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” icon=”” width=”” class=”” id=””][separator style_type=”single” top_margin=”1″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” icon=”” width=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]
